Hail season 2027: how Texas homeowners will choose a roofer

Oct 12, 2026 · 6 min read · ontheshortlist.ai

Texas recorded 902 hail events of one inch or larger in 2025, after 878 in 2024 and 1,123 in 2023, against a ten-year mean of 1,073 (NOAA Storm Prediction Center, via the Insurance Information Institute; 2023 to 2025 are preliminary reports, and the mean comes from the final SPC database for 2015-2024 as tabulated by The Roofing Brief). State Farm alone paid $1.4 billion in Texas hail claims in 2025, more than in any other state, on 95,200 claims. Texas has been first for hail damage for eleven years running.

The money per job moved as well. Verisk put the average residential roof replacement in 2025 at $17,631, 33% above the 2021-2024 average. A repair averaged $4,699. One replacement pays for a great deal of marketing.

What is different about the next season

The storm will look like the last one. The homeowner has changed. Scorpion surveyed 2,000 US homeowners who had hired a trade in the last 18 months: 22% use AI tools such as ChatGPT to research or find recommendations. BrightLocal found 45% of US consumers using AI for local business recommendations in March 2026, up from 6% a year earlier, and 64% among people aged 30 to 44.

The habit is also changing on Google itself. Whitespark counted an AI summary on top of 68% of local searches in July 2026; the map pack showed on 39%. Pew Research measured what that summary does to clicks: users clicked a result in 15% of Google searches without an AI summary and in 8% of those with one. More than two thirds of US Google searches now end without a click at all (SparkToro, June 2026).

Put the two together. After the next hailstorm, a share of Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and Austin homeowners will type one sentence into an AI assistant, read four names and call one of them. Whoever is outside those four does not exist for that homeowner.

What the homeowner asks

We built the 12 questions we measure from the way homeowners actually phrase them. The ones that come up most after a storm are about the insurance claim, who can come this week, and who handles the adjuster. The emergency ones are blunt: "A tree fell on my roof, who does emergency tarping?" "My roof is leaking right now during a storm, who can come today?"

The models answer those questions from what they can read. A roofer with a page that explains how the claim works, what happens with the deductible and how fast the crew moves after a storm gives the model something to quote. A roofer whose site is a gallery with a phone number gives it nothing.

Four things to fix before April

Texas has no state roofing license; HB 3344 cleared committee 7 to 1 and died on the House calendar on May 8, 2025, and the next regular session is in 2027. Our working hypothesis is that, without a license, the models lean on the four signals above. The homeowner certainly does.

Before the season, measure. The free check takes 25 seconds and tells you how often the four models name your company in your city today.
